The PTA values all past and present educational experiences of the CAHS alumni, and feels that it important to continuously share those experiences with the current CAHS students to keep them motivated and inspired to aim high with a "can do" attitude. Meeting Minutes-- May 6, 2008

Friends of CAHS PTA Minutes
May 6, 2008
Location: Room 128 CAHS

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Penny Winkle. There were approximately 17 members present.

Hospitality Report: Gail Sech reported that the Staff Appreciation Luncheon will be on Friday, May 23. Sandwiches from Subway and drinks will be purchased. Parents will be asked to donate salads and desserts. They should be dropped off by 10:30 a.m. Michele Sherman volunteered to take over the job of Hospitality Chairperson for next year! Thank you, Michele!

Secretary's Report: The minutes were presented and approved (motions by Anne Hoke and Kim Montague). The number of members has reached 101.

Grant-Writing Committee: Stephanie Ludwig reported that the Safety grant has been turned in to Dr. Farley. Anne Hoke and Toni Dodge have worked on a grant for $1000.00 for music/drama/author. Toni Dodge and Mr. Dodrill have been working on a large grant for a Chinese teacher.

Publicity Report: Gerry Brevoort reported several articles in the news: the 30th anniversary of CAHS, the author program, Justin Sherman and the Science Fair, the Robotics team. Articles in process include the National Honor Society picture, 2008 Valedictorians, and Macbeth. A suggestion was made to create a collection of CAHS articles in the local newspapers this school year.

Internships: Jeff Sherman and Anne Hoke have been soliciting internships at the Ohio House and Senate. Anne has also been working to secure internships with the City of Columbus. Penny will send a mass email about this information. A big thanks goes to Anne and Jeff for their work on this.

School Store Proposal: Student Chaunta Banks presented a proposal that the 2009 create a school store to sell school supplies, increase school spirit and to teach entrepreneurship. Mr Matticola has agreed to be the Teacher Advisor. Jeff Sherman agreed to advise on tax issues. An idea was presented that the store buy Humanities books from students and resell to students at a low price. Chaunta will come to the June meeting with a proprosal.

Online grading: If you signed up but couldn't go please check with Mr.s Powell and get your password.

Treasurer's Report: Trish Geoghegan presented the March statement and it was filed for audit (motions by Beth Gerber and Gerry Brevoort.

Teacher Requests: Penny will show the request list to Mrs. Powell to make sure that they cannot be provided by the district. All requests made by teachers were approved.

Block Scheduling: Jeff Sherman and Beth Gerber met with the staff which is looking at alternate forms of block schedules which are recommended for the arts. The next meeting will be held in mid-May.

Alumni Association: Kim Dillard reported that the alumni database is on the Access program. Kim will check the price of Access. Edna will talk to Mrs. Powell about the graduation program alumni association notice. Mrs. Robinson is working on a link to the email which is cahsalumniassoc@yahoo.com. Kim has put a blog on classmates.com.

PTA Bylaws: Stephanie Ludwig presented the changes and additions and they were discussed. These changes were to make necessary changes to the timing of nominations and voting, and to allow for more than one treasurer and multiple vice presidents. They were adopted by a unanimous vote.

Nominating Committee: Anne Hoke presented the slate of officers. Kim Dillard volunteered to be the treasurer. The revised slate of officers is as follows: President – Anne Hoke; Vice-Presidents – Toni Dodge, Julia Harrison, Julie Lovett; Secretary – Stephanie Ludwig; Treasurers – Kim Dillard; and Ancillary Treasurer – Trish Geoghegan. There was a unanimous vote of approval for this slate of officers.

Credit Recovery: Chuck Zalac and Anne Hoke reported about their meeting (which included Lemuel Harrison and Pat Enciso), with the staff. Mrs. Powell agreed to stiffen up requirements to pass Humanities. Credit Recovery will ad essays, etc. The staff will work on this at the staff retreat.

Spring Celebration: May 18th, from 4-6 p.m. At the Park of Roses shelter house. Drinks and paper products to be provided. The CAHS Chorale will perform.

Author Series: The consensus is that it was GREAT!

Used Book Recycling Project: Gerry Brevoort explained the 'Pass It On' project. Families can drop used books in the marked tub in the library. These books will be placed on special shelves. Students may take a book to read, return it, donate other books, etc. This is to promote FUN reading!

April 5th Event: Over 130 people attended this event which welcomed incoming freshman families to the school. It was a very successful day.

Bracelet Day Bake Sale: May 16th

Oakland Nursery: Two students will participate in an internship next year to redesign the courtyard. Kim Montague will work with them.

PTA Accomplishments in 2007-08: A list of things that the PTA has accomplished was compiled and presented at the meeting.

Mentoring Sign-Up: Anne Hoke recruited parents to contact incoming freshmen parents to encourage preparation for next year.

Honor Recognition Event: This event will be held on Wednesday, May 28th in the courtyard. We will request volunteers to help.

Possible 30 Year Anniversary Event: This would be for the fall. We will discuss this further at the June meeting.

Cupcake Day – We provide free cupcakes for students to reward them for hard work this year. We will check to see if May 22nd will work.

Welcome Center: There is a possibility for a ninth grade wing for next year if the Welcome Center moves.

Front Yard Sign: Parent Gail Burkholder has volunteered to take on this job for next year. Thanks!
