Friends of CAHS PTA Minutes
January 8, 2008
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm at CAHS library. Parents introduced themselves. The student officers of the robotics team and the administrator adviser, Dr. O., presented a video about their work with college professors, college students, and Battelle employees to build robots and compete in national/regional competitions. Being on the team gives CAHS students an opportunity to work with big league engineers. All CAHS students are invited to join.
Principal's Report: Ms. Sherry Powell provided PTA with a hand-out.
· CAHS received a Breakthrough School Award from National Association Secondary Principals-Metlife because of CAHS students' success in the Ohio Graduation Test, post graduation, AP & IB programs, and internships.
· CAHS website - beginning to update.
· On line grades - CAHS teachers and principal plan to ask reform panel if they can put students' grades on line.
· Kaleidoscope - Event for prospective CAHS students has been rescheduled to January 30, 2008.
· Block scheduling - CAHS department chairs will discuss types of class scheduling. Plan to have a decision by spring break, if possible.
· Final exams - Finals are scheduled for January 16-17, 2008. January 18, 2008 is reserved for make-up per arrangement with teacher.
Secretary's Report: The December 2007 minutes were presented and accepted.
Treasurer's Report: The December 2007 report was filed for audit. The January bank statement was just received but is not included in the December 2007 report.
A group of OSU students are willing to work at CAHS on February 5 and February 26, 2008. Interested people should contact Penny.
Activity Coordinator Report: Parental involvement in December's bake sale was great. Carolyn Rhodes and Barbara Ransom of the CAHS PTA will attend the Parent Leadership Institute in Cincinnati in February 2008 to learn how to help other parents become more involved in their children's education. PTA voted unanimously to pay for the hotel rooms for each CAHS PTA representative.
Hospitality Report: Gail Sech asked for donations for Staff Breakfast on Jan. 11. She also asked for donations for Staff Dessert Buffet on February 14, 2008 and for help setting up and breaking down the tables. There will also be a Staff Breakfast in March and April 2008 and a Staff Lunch in May 2008.
Grant Writing Report: Awarded a $1900. national PTA grant. Waiting for result for Target grant for the proposed Civil Rights Trip. Request assistance in library grants.
A committee was formed to decide on the use of the PTA Award. Mark Hill, Kim Montague and Barbara Ransom volunteered to be on this committee.
Block Scheduling: Tabled until next meeting.
Chess Tournament Report: Jeff Sherman and Penny will co-chair on February 2. Need food donation and volunteers. A sheet was circulated to get donations and volunteers.
By-laws committee update: Voted and approved changes to CAHS PTA by-laws.
Meeting with Dr. Harris: There will be a meeting on Wednesday Feb. 6 with Dr. Harris to follow-up last year's meeting with her about CAHS' future as an academic powerhouse. Julia Harrison, Anne Hoke, Jeff Sherman and Bob Benzel will work on the committee to plan this meeting.
Alumni Association Report: Working on building the association membership.
OSU Office of Minority Affairs: Meeting in February to discuss with parents and students about available OSU scholarships.
T-shirt sale: Another T-shirt sale will be launched.
Nominating committee: Anne Light Hoke and Jeff Sherman will co-chair. Need others to join committee to choose next year's CAHS PTA officers to continue the momentum of this year's strong PTA under Penny's leadership.
Target RedCard: People who want to designate CAHS for contributions from their Target RedCard credit card number and CAHS school ID number which is 82445. Target will donate 1% of all purchases on the Target RedCard or ½ % on all purchases on the Target VISA card to CAHS.
The next meeting will be at 7:00 pm at the Hilltop Library at 511 S. Hague Road on the westside near Sullivant Avenue in Columbus.
