Did you also know that many employers will match donations made by employees to non-profit organizations like the PTA?

CAHS Alumni

The PTA values all past and present educational experiences of the CAHS alumni, and feels that it important to continuously share those experiences with the current CAHS students to keep them motivated and inspired to aim high with a "can do" attitude. We appreciate all of the help and support the CAHS alumni have given the PTA in the past. If you are willing to help support the PTA, please send us an email at cahs.pta@gmail.com. Join the CAHS Alumni Association (1978-1990) on Facebook, or start your own alumni group!

October 2, 2007 - Meeting

Written by Edna Reed

The meeting was called to order at the Martin Luther King Library at 7:00 pm with 22 members present. Introductions were made. Penny thanked all for their dedication to PTA and our school.

Secretary’s Report: The minutes of the September meeting and the minutes of the September 11th Board Meeting were presented and approved.

Membership Report: Edna reported that we currently have 65 members.

Treasurer's Report: Trish Geoghegan
The 2007-08 year was presented. The financial statement from the bank was not available prior to the meeting so Trish will wait until the November meeting to ask for approval.

A motion was made and approved to purchase a film for the science department ($89.95) and a new periodic table (175.00) [Fawcett]; to purchase a projector to connect to a computer for AP History and Humanities (699.99) and a security cable (45.99) [Thornburg]; we will contribute $300.00 to help pay for accompanists for winter/spring concerts [Elder]; and purchase two dry erase boards for classrooms [Coblentz]. We will get the cost estimates and review additional purchases of dry erase boards when funds become available. More purchases will be approved at a later date.

Hospitality Report: Gail Sech
The next Staff Appreciation Breakfast will be held Friday, October 12th. We typically spend $50.00 per month for expenses. The rest is provided in baked and purchased donations.

Grant Writing Report: Anne Hoke for Stephanie Ludwig
Toni Dodge is working on a grant from Lowe's for Ms. Cordy who has specific needs for the theater.
A committee member is working on a grant to help with funding for the Chinese teacher.
Diane Nance is working with Dr. Murray on a grant from Target for a Civil Rights Tour.
Toni Dodge is composing a survey for teachers for their vision of their subjects for the next five years.
Anne also mentioned a Red Card program with Target similar to the Kroger Cares cards that earns money for the PTA to spend on school needs.
Diane Nance also explained a partnership opportunity with AT&T and Oakland Nursery through the Partners in Education Program. We are looking for parents who have any kind of connection to employees of these two companies. Please contact Diane Nance if you have any information that might help with this endeavor.

No-Phonathon Report: Diane Nance
The wish list form will be going out to teachers again. No date for the No-Phonathon has been set but it will be set soon. Our plan is to hold it in the fall this year so that we don't have to wait so long to make purchases for teachers.

Publicity Report: Gerry Brevoort:
Gerry passed around a copy of the article that was printed about CAHS students staging a rally in support of the Jena 6 students in Louisiana.
She is working on publicity for Candidates Night on October 24th.
Please let Gerry know of any school activities that should be publicized.

Candidates Night: Penny Winkle (and comm. members Tracy Taylor, Mark Hill and Chuck Zalac)
The format has been set. Diane Nance is working to get a moderator.
Please get the posters out. Post them at libraries, places of worship, etc. Thanks to Tracy Taylor for the design.
Invite friends – this event is for the public, not just CAHS.
Ms. Thornburg is getting students involved.
Committee members will work to formulate questions.
(Please look at the minutes from the May, June, July and August meetings posted on the CAHS PTA website (www.cahs-pta.com) to get information about our concerns regarding Columbus City Schools policies about Credit Recovery, adding to the CAHS student population without proper planning, etc.)

Bracelet Day Bake Sale : Edna Reed
The schedule for Bake Sales for this school year are as follows: September 21, October 12, November 9 (if the October date works OK being on the same day as the Staff Appreciation Breakfast), December 14, January 18, February 8, NO BAKE SALE IN MARCH, April 18, May 16.

Carolyn Rhodes, Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for keeping track of volunteers who donate. Contact her at jazzcarolyn44@sbcglobal.net.This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it

Nancy Hirsch has two sweatshirts leftover from the sale. She suggested a raffle. We need to check with Mrs. Powell to make sure this is OK. If it is, we will sell raffle tickets for fifty cents each. If not, we will devise a procedure to draw names to give them away.

Update on Other National Academic Lottery Schools: Anne Hoke
We are still waiting for feedback. Toni Dodge is helping to collect and organize data. Get any information to Anne.

CAHS PTA Website: We are looking for someone to work on our website. We are having some difficulties adding information to it. If anyone is willing to help with that, please contact Penny.

Talent Show: We will not be having a Talent Show. We will discuss it next month with Mrs. Powell.

International Dinner and Movie Night: We will discuss these at next month's meeting.

How is the new Academic Year Going, especially for first year students?
Concerns were expressed about the number of study halls. The consensus was that we need teachers, not study halls. What can be done to alleviate this problem? Is downtown concerned?

CAHS Alumni Association: We are interested in the development of an alumni association. Kim Dillard, Latricia Wilson, and Edna Reed volunteered to work on this.

Volunteers for Middle School PTA meetings: Penny asked for volunteers to attend their students middle school PTA meetings to explain the academic program at CAHS and help motivate parents to look at CAHS as a possibility for their college-bound students.

The next PTA meeting will be Tuesday, November 6 at CAHS in Room 128.

Respectfully submitted,
Edna Reed, secretary
